World Ocean Day 2026 Workshop
Social Innovation Japan recently delivered a World Ocean Day workshop for a major shipping company in Tokyo, focused on ocean health, sustainability, and the role of business in driving positive impact.
The session explored some of the major challenges facing our oceans today, including biodiversity loss, ocean acidification, plastic pollution, and decarbonisation. Rather than looking at these issues only through data and targets, the workshop also invited participants to consider how ocean health connects to everyday life, culture, and the things people already know and care about.
One example that resonated strongly with participants was Euglena’s “The Day Sushi Disappears” campaign, which used projected “last reservation dates” to show how climate change could affect some of Japan’s most loved sushi toppings.
The campaign helped make the impacts of warming seas, acidification, and changing marine ecosystems feel more tangible by connecting them to something deeply familiar: sushi.
This sparked an energetic discussion about how sustainability communication can move beyond information-sharing. While data is important for understanding the scale of a challenge, connection is often what makes people care, reflect, and take action.
Through the workshop, participants explored how businesses can approach sustainability not only as a responsibility, but also as an opportunity to engage employees, customers, and stakeholders in meaningful conversations about the future.
At SIJ, we design and facilitate talks, workshops, and programmes that help organisations explore sustainability, impact-driven business, and how to turn awareness into action.
